Freshmen Research the Great Depression

  • East Islip High School freshmen in teacher Greg Kguloian’s English classes recently read John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” and researched the Great Depression era, using three or more reliable resources. The unit culminated with the students sharing their research reports with each other via presentations.

“My intention was to help my class kids understand how the average American family lived through and endured the worst financial hardship that may still live in some of their older family members’ memories,” Kguloian said. “Each and every one of them worked cooperatively and enhanced each other’s perceptions and empathy for the less fortunate in our country, past and present. I hope that my pupils were able to share what they’ve learned in class about life in America during the time period that we have studied. This poignant lesson was designed for kids today to better understand and truly appreciate what they may take for granted.”
