EI Technology Skills Students Explore Coding and Outer Space

  • East Islip High School’s CORE technology skills class recently completed a unit in robotics design and programming, during with the students had the opportunity to build robots using the VEX GO Robotics system, an affordable constructive system that teaches the fundamentals of STEAM learning through fun, hand-on activities. Upon completion of their robots, the students installed various sensors and coded them to navigate through a maze on a simulated Mars surface.

“This helps students perceive coding and engineering in a fun and positive way,” technology teacher and robotics adviser James Connell said.

The students then visited the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Uniondale and witnessed real-life examples of space exploration vehicles. They also watched a video on the history of planetary exploration craft.

“I loved visiting the Cradle of Aviation Museum and seeing all of the exhibits,” CORE technology skills student Chris Urraro said. “Watching the movie in the planetarium was my favorite part of the day.”
