Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ and RCK Fifth Graders Discover Future Careers

  • Fifth graders at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School experienced an unforgettable journey into the world of careers at dual Career Fairs in March. In an interdisciplinary effort between fifth-grade teachers, the STEAM program, the school libraries and the guidance and art departments, students had the chance to meet professionals from various fields, and explore and critically think about their future aspirations. They traveled from table to table with their “career passports” to explore opportunities in the workplace and reflect upon their top three career options.

Whether their dream is to save lives as a doctor or nurse, observe flights as an air traffic controller, be an auctioneer, teach children, fight fires, work with agriculture, create masterpieces as an architect, practice law, oversee commercial real estate, develop websites, engineer computer devices for airplanes, construct houses or apply electrical skills, the fifth graders were able to ask meaningful questions and applied professional communication techniques while speaking with the professionals. Each guest shared their unique experiences and insights, inspiring students to dream big and aim high.

“Our interactive and hands-on experiences allowed students to explore different careers in a fun and engaging manner,” STEAM teacher Carol Wilson said. “It was an opportunity to ignite students’ passions and discover their future career paths. Together, we all inspired the next generation to chase their dreams, and to explore the endless possibilities for a brighter future.”
