Twenty-One East Islip ENL Students Reach Commanding Level

  • The East Islip School District’s English as a New Language Department honored the achievement of 21 students at its annual ENL Commanding recognition ceremony. These students earned a Commanding score on the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test, and were recognized at the ENL parent orientation meeting in the district office boardroom on Feb. 1.

    Connetquot Elementary School second grader Amanda Navarro; John F. Kennedy Elementary School third graders Jayden Bonilla, Jefferson Chacon Zelayndia and Brianna Cisneros, fourth graders Augustina Navarro Alvear and Charming Jin, and fifth grader Mateo Rodriguez; East Islip Middle School seventh grader Angelina Zheng and eighth graders Vivian Delarosa, Isabella Munoz Campuzano and Jose Pineda Saavedra; East Islip High School freshmen Adonis De Los Santos Sanchez, Anubis Egans Quintana, David Sagastume and Marilyn Salmeron, sophomore Marlon Lopez, juniors Jhassiel Sorto Castro and Jamal Colon, and seniors Joan Munoz Campos, Edwin Vanegas Tello and Freddy Zavala were all provided certificates by Jean Marie D’Aversa, the district’s ENL coordinator and assistant principal at the high school and middle school.

    “This ceremony is always a wonderful celebratory event,” D’Aversa said. “The students work very hard to reach the Commanding level. You can truly see the pride on their faces, as well as their parents’. This is proof that hard work and dedication pays off.  I am honored to be a part of the ENL program here and am looking forward to growing together as a family.”
