East Islip student Addison Monahan, a first grader at Connetquot Elementary School, was recently named the countywide winner of the 2023 “Be Pool Smart” poster contest for her “Swim with a Buddy” entry. Since 2007, the Suffolk County competition has invited elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety by creating posters that illustrate one or more safety tips.

Monahan and her family were joined at a recognition ceremony at the County General Meeting in Hauppauge by Suffolk County Legislator Steve Flotteron, Connetquot Principal Nicholas Bilotti and art teacher Christina Spera-Bartlett.

“Addison’s poster message shows her understanding of the potential dangers faced by all swimmers here in Suffolk County,” Flotteron said.

“We are all so proud of Addison and the artwork she drew to help keep kids safe as they swim this summer,” Bilotti said.
