EIHS Freshmen Girl Scouts Renovate Shelter for Silver Award Project

  • East Islip High School freshmen in Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Troop 946 – Abby Buonincontri, Sarah Buonincontri, Cora Cappellino, Francesca Dima, Charlotte Galli, Anna Holm, Claire Schmalenberger and Ashley Williams, as well as St. Anthony's freshman Emily Bennardo, who was an East Islip Middle School eighth grader when she began the project – recently completed three Silver Award projects by renovating a local women and children’s domestic violence shelter.

Guided by troop leaders Christine Cappellino and Janice Galli, the Girl Scouts raised funds to clean, furnish and paint the shelter’s library and playroom. During a collection drive held by the Scouts, community members generously supported the effort by providing books, toys, crafts and donations for the purchase of furnishings. The finished project provided an important lesson for the freshmen.

“We wanted the girls to see that the community has these types of organizations if they are ever in need,” Galli said. “We also wanted them to learn empathy for others in difficult situations.”
