Five Exceptional East Islip Artists Win at Scholastic Awards

  • Five exceptional artists from East Islip High School were recognized in the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

Naomy Mukai received a Gold Key for her “Conscious Exploration” art portfolio, Marley Snyder received a Gold Key for her photograph “Mysterious Mushroom,” Catherine Sasso received a Silver Key for her drawing “Still Life of Crushed Cans,” and Meeghan Mahon and Marlana Rebholz received honorable mention for their respective “Long Island Sunsets” and “Let Your Dreams Take Flight” photographs.

“I am not surprised that Naomy has won the highest honor of Gold Key for her portfolio she submitted to Scholastic, because her work is phenomenal,” teacher Dan Figliozzi said. “With this body of work, she showcases her breadth of knowledge in photography and psychology and displays a self-awareness and maturity that is beyond her years. She is one of the most talented art students to pass through our department. I am so proud of her and her accomplishments.”

“Catherine is one of the most hardworking students I have ever worked with,” Figliozzi said. “She has a natural drawing ability and showcases this with her photorealistic charcoal drawing. Congratulations to her on this Silver Key Award, she deserves it.”

“I am so proud of all of our students that received awards,” teacher Heather Toomey said. “Marley is currently enrolled in Photography 2 Honors and is a dedicated student in the art department. Meeghan and Marlana are enrolled in Photography 1 and are developing a strong body of work with their excellent photographic skills. Congratulations to all of our students who entered and those that received recognition for their fantastic artwork.”
