Art Students¡¯ Skills Recognized for Youth Art Month Contest

  • East Islip High School senior Angel Rivas and junior Sophie Jensen recently received honorable mention designation in the New York State Youth Art Month Flag Design Contest. This National Art Education Association program tasked student-artists to create a flag or banner representing New York with the theme “Your Art, Your Voice.”

Rivas, currently enrolled in Heather Toomey’s Digital Imaging and Design 2 class, is a member of the National Art Honor Society. Jensen, currently enrolled in Dan Figliozzi's Advanced Placement art class, serves as vice president of the National Art Honor Society.

“Getting recognized in the state is truly an award in itself, especially considering I’ve only been in the art scene for a year,” Rivas said.

"I am so proud of Angel and Sophie,” Toomey said. “They are both extremely talented young artists and we are excited that they are representing the East Islip High School Art Department and National Art Honor Society.  The NAEA always provides such wonderful opportunities for young artists that recognize their skills as well as support and celebrate the visual arts.”
