Fifth Graders Learn Vessel Design During Day of Clay

  • Professional sculptor and potter Cliff Mendelson brought another Day of Clay to fifth graders at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School, with each student given the opportunity to design and develop their own ceramic vessel, which was eventually painted and fired in a kiln. The vessel designs were based on Native American techniques. During the workshop, Mendelson shared his expertise as he demonstrated the art of creating pottery on a wheel, empowering the students with knowledge concerning how vessels are designed and its connection to various cultures.

“The students enjoyed learning about the process and effort involved in creating ceramics pieces and gained an appreciation for the skill involved making any work of art,” Mendelson said.

“We were thrilled to invite Cliff Mendelson back to our schools after last year’s success with the collaborative vessels created,” Art and Music Director Dr. Rob Wottawa said. “This year, each child had the chance to make their individualized vessel that they can treasure for a lifetime. Our art teachers were inspired by the designs and enthusiasm of our students to learn a new medium and several new techniques.”
