High School Artists Awarded for Excellence at Go APE Exhibition

  • Three talented East Islip High School student-artists – seniors Jackie Arevalo-Carrillo, Delilah Bauer, and Sophia LoMonaco – were recently chosen to participate in the 17th annual Go APE Advanced Placement Exhibition at the Art League of Long Island. The gallery show, highlighting exceptional work by 103 art students from all over Long Island, ran from Feb. 24 to March 9 at the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills.

Arevalo-Carrillo’s piece, “Crecimiento,” is a work of oil, embroidery thread and flowers on reclaimed fabric. Bauer has been working mainly in acrylic painting this year, and her piece, “Flash,” is a portrait of a fellow art student that showcases beautiful shifts in neon color. LoMonaco's piece, “Embrace,” is a self-portrait done in oil that showcases her newfound love for her curly hair. The trio are all enrolled in Dan Figliozzi’s AP Art and Design course.

The show ended with a closing reception and awards ceremony on March 9, where Bauer and LoMonaco were acknowledged with Awards of Excellence.

“All three of these students have continued to work so hard these last four years as art students,” Figliozzi said. “They have grown tremendously and have continued to amaze me with their painting abilities. Well-deserved wins for Sophia and Delilah, as the paintings they presented are truly masterful.”

“I am honored to have gotten the opportunity to showcase my work amongst many other talented students in the Go APE show,” Arevalo-Carrillo said.

“I am so grateful to have been chosen to show my work in this show, and I am extremely grateful to have been selected for the award I received,” Bauer said.

“I am so thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this exhibition, and it was amazing to be able to share it with other student-artists across Long Island,” LoMonaco said. “I’m beyond honored that I was granted an Award of Excellence and am so grateful for the experience.”

“We are so proud of the work our three students submitted, and it is a testament to their talent and hard work that they were accepted,” Art and Music Director Dr. Rob Wottawa said. “Out of eight awards, East Islip took two! This is due to the high quality of our art teachers and their ability to elicit the best of our students.”
