Five East Islip HS Bowlers Compete With Suffolk All-Stars

  • The Section XI All-Star boys and girls bowling teams – featuring five student-athletes from East Islip High School – competed at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Bowling Championships on March 11 at Strike ’N Spare Lanes in Syracuse.

The Suffolk boys All-Stars, including East Islip freshmen Brenden Muller and Matthew Sundberg, finished the first set with a lead, but couldn’t close it out in the afternoon set and ended up in seventh place. Sundberg, a member of the team for the second consecutive year, averaged 185 on the day. Of the 66 athletes competing, Muller finished with a pin fall of 1,223 to average 203.83 on the day, the 28th spot. He was also selected unanimously by the coaching staff to receive the tournament sportsmanship award for Section XI.

“Brenden is a great kid, a coach’s dream,” Suffolk coach John Romero said. “He did very well for himself and it was my privilege to have the opportunity to work with him. He’s a class act.”

The Suffolk girls All-Stars, including East Islip junior Kailyn Bloch, sophomore Dakota Collins and freshman Brooke Andresen, recovered from a 170-plus pin deficit to earn second place in the tournament by a single pin, finishing with a six-game total of 6,283 pins. Bloch averaged 211.67 (sixth best out of 66 bowlers that competed in the tournament), Collins averaged 198.83 (22nd) and Andresen averaged 196.33 (26th).

“The team fought hard and resiliently when faced with adversity,” East Islip coach Robert Sconone said.
