Girls Basketball Team Celebrates Senior Day, Lady Legends Inductions and Playoff Success

  • East Islip High School senior basketball players Kaelyn Gordon, Sara Simonetti and Grace Williamson celebrated their Senior Day on Feb. 1. Their accomplishments include two league titles and a trip to the county finals.

    “Collectively, they have spearheaded a renaissance of the program with their dedication and stellar play,” coach Michael Petre said.

    Simonetti, East Islip’s all-time leader in three-pointer, celebrated becoming the fifth member of the 1,000 Point Club in the history of the East Islip girls basketball program during a win over John Glenn High School on Jan. 13.   

    East Islip is currently 17-4 overall and 13-2 in League 3 play. After qualifying for their fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs, the team beat visiting Sayville 50-47 on Feb. 17 in a thrilling overtime playoff game, sending them to the semifinals. They next face Centereach on Feb. 22. Tickets to the noon game will be sold at the door (students pay $5 with school ID) and are also available in advance .  

    In other program news, four East Islip High School girls basketball alumni were inducted into the East Islip Lady Legends Club during this winter season: Class of 2022 graduate Jessica Peluso, an All-Long Island player who helped lead the team to an appearance in last year’s county finals, and who is currently attending the University of Colorado on a lacrosse scholarship; Class of 2020 graduate Gia Gremaux, a League 3 Player of the Year who as a senior, helped lead East Islip to its first league title in 15 years; Class of 2016 graduate Alexa Mattera, an All-County player and member of the 1,000 Point Club; and Class of 2003 graduate Cheri Davis, who attended Stony Brook University on a basketball scholarship.
