East Islip Softball Team Introduces YES Students to the Sport

  • East Islip High School’s varsity softball team recently held a free clinic for disadvantaged children in the YES afterschool program at Cordello Avenue Elementary School in Central Islip, introducing the younger students to the sport of softball. The team put on an exhibition of their skills and then ran interactive stations for the YES students, who ranged from third to sixth graders.

“It was a great experience being role models for the kids in our community and getting to know them better,” student Kayla Varga said. “I really enjoyed teaching them more about sports, and seeing how much fun they had made it even better.”

“Doing something you know made an impact on others is the best feeling,” student Meagan Olson said.

“I loved having the opportunity to see each child’s face light up as they saw an actual softball team – and a varsity team – at their school,” student Kate Vessalico said.

“The East Islip softball team’s visit to the YES afterschool program at Cordello was truly inspiring, fostering a sense of community and teamwork among our youth,” YES Director Veronica Builes said. “Their presence not only provided a unique perspective on sportsmanship, but also left a lasting impact, encouraging our students to pursue their passions with dedication and determination. A special thanks to the players for being positive role models.”
