  • A First Grader’s Persuasive Letter

Haylee Shelorke, a first grader at Timber Point, wrote a letter to Superintendent John Dolan as part of a persuasive letter writing unit in writer’s workshop.

As part of the writing process, Shelorke came up with different ideas for changes she wished for, both at home and at school. She decided to request that a special class be opened at Timber Point so that her little sister could come to school with her. To Shelorke’s surprise, Dolan came to visit her at the school and brought along a handwritten response. Although her wish could not be honored, a gift certificate to Stanley’s Bakery was in the envelope with her letter. Dolan did offer her some advice: “Encourage your little sister, with the hopes that one day she will be as bright and shining as you!”

  • Representing East Islip Artists in Sketchbook Project

Students in the high school’s National Art Honor Society started the Sketchbook Project last year, but were unable to complete it because of COVID-19. This year, they decided to try again.

“While we didn't ‘pass’ the sketchbook this year, we had members create stickers for the book and then compiled them together for a mixed media sketchbook that represents the art of East Islip’s National Art Honor Society,” teacher Heather Toomey said. “Our members will now be a part of the digital archive and engaged in a global community of art making that is available for anyone in the world to see.”

“I used one of my photos for the stickers that were added to the Sketchbook, and it’s nice to be a part of this global project,” NAHS member Emma Sasso said.

“I really enjoyed our approach to the Sketchbook Project,” teacher Dan Figliozzi said. “We managed to create a cool sketchbook with our students by having each of them make a sticker. Each sticker was then arranged into the sketchbook to create a unique art object that is a visual representation of our students here at East Islip. It’s cool that we will now get a digital copy of the work and that it will be located in an archive at the Brooklyn Museum.”

  • Two Naval Academy Appointments

Two graduating seniors from the high school’s Class of 2021, Peter Carino and Olivia Zhang, recently received appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy after an extremely rigorous and demanding application process. Both graduates were honored on June 9 in a ceremony in the school’s outdoor pavilion presided over by USNA Blue & Gold Officer Mary Ann Coughlin, who is also a retired East Islip teacher.

“I have wanted to serve in the military since the eighth grade,” Carino said. “I planned to enlist after college. However, the Naval Academy seemed like the best option for me to take on a leadership position and become an officer. I look forward to the challenges I am soon to embark on throughout my years as a midshipman. I plan on majoring in history and pursuing a career in special operations upon graduation.”

“My desire to join the Navy was fueled by my passion to work in the aviation community,” Zhang said. “As a first-generation student and first-generation American with no family military history, wanting to join the Navy was unconventional, but I had an interest in aviation and aeronautics and I also had a desire to serve the nation. I visited the Naval Academy when I was 12 years old and from then on, I made it my goal to attend USNA after high school. During the application process, I received congressional nominations from Rep. Peter King and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. I received a Letter of Assurance to the Naval Academy in January and my Offer of Appointment in March. I joined the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps when I was 13. Throughout over four years in the program, I was given an exclusive insight into life in the Naval service, which furthered my desire to join the Navy. I looked up to the officers I met in the program who each had their unique experiences in several different branches in the military, and to older cadets who went on to enlist or commission into the services. I was able to earn the rank of chief petty officer, the program’s highest rank, one which less than 1% of U.S. Naval Sea Cadets have been able to reach. I cite Lt. Cmdr. Marlene Gandiosi and Lt. Franco Pacheco as my mentors in the program, and the CPL Kyle Carpenter Division as the unit that allowed me to reach my full potential and achieve my dream of attending the Naval Academy. I plan to major in aerospace engineering and minor in Chinese. I hope to commission into naval aviation after I graduate as a naval aviator.”
