  • 4/28/2022 HS Golf Simulator Swings Into Action

East Islip High School’s junior varsity boys and girls golf teams have recently found a good way to get in some extra practice on rainy days, thanks to the installation of a new golf swing simulator. Facilitated by Athletic Director Steven Restivo, the Mevo+ Launch Monitor is housed at nearby East Islip Middle School.

“I was trying to figure out a way to stay competitive with our local schools that have JV golf programs,” coach Christopher Robertson said. “I realized I had an unused practice room that was just the right size to fit in a swing simulator. When I told Mr. Restivo my idea, he threw his full support behind it. The custodial staff were very helpful and were able to paint the room in our school colors. We finally got all our equipment right after winter break and were able to set up the new simulator. It works well and can analyze your swing.  The Mevo+ tells the distance, spin, carry, club head speed, ball speed and smash factor. It even has five virtual courses and driving ranges you can practice on. The kids love using the simulator and it comes in very handy on rainy days. We look forward to getting better each year, and this device will certainly help both our teams.”

4/13/2022 Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ Takes on “March Mathness”

Last month, John F. Kennedy Elementary School celebrated “March Mathness,” an annual academic competition of math skills, math strength and math endurance. Students in all grades logged in to their IXL math accounts and attempted math problems over a 10-day period. The winners were Nuala Quinlan’s third-grade class, Megan Himaya and Karl Von Glahn’s fourth-grade class, and Laura Meehan’s fifth-grade class. Individual grade level winners were recognized as well.

Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½’s resident DJs – Karl Von Glahn (aka “DJ IXL”) and Michael Fernandez (aka “DJ Fernando”) – used the school’s announcements to cheer the students on, encouraging them to do their best and reach for math heights while reminding the students that everyone was a winner if they were practicing math and sharpening their abilities.

“The students and classes competed against each other, but more importantly, they challenged themselves to increase their math expertise,” Principal Deborah Smith said. “Anyone who participated should consider themselves a champion.”

The East Islip School-Business Partnership held its inaugural STEAM Day in the district’s Early Childhood Center on April 8, attended by hundreds of second and fourth grade students and facilitated by middle and high school students.

“STEAM Day was designed to give second and fourth grade students an experience that facilitated an interest into the study and possible careers in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics,” School-Business Partnership coordinator Bridgette Lopiccolo said.

Students attended the event with their classroom teachers and explored robotics, played with art and technology manipulatives, tried their hands at building towers, learned about refraction through photography, watched a drone fly through the ECC, and so much more.

East Islip High School Robotics Club President Zoe Elder assisted with the event as a facilitator.

“It’s important that the students attend this kind of event,” Elder said. “I got into STEAM because of an event like this when I was younger.”

After the students explored the available stations, they gathered to watch two short STEAM videos. There was also a main event, a robotics contest between two teams for all to witness and to pique the interests of the students even further.

4/6/2022 EIHS Celebrates National World Language Week

Every year in March, schools across the nation celebrate National World Language Week to bring awareness to the importance of learning foreign languages.

At East Islip High School, where classes study American Sign Language, French, Italian and Spanish, students learned about each language’s culture and played fun Kahoot! games. The festivities kicked off on March 7 with ASL Day, as ASL students taught signs and interpreted songs in ASL.

“We are lucky to offer American Sign Language at our school,” teacher Jovina Bratt said. “It is a beautiful, visual, hands-on language that is the unique natural language that Deaf individuals and others use to communicate. It has the same linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English.”

The next day brought a focus on French, with French Club students playing French bingo and tossing beads in a nod to Mardi Gras, while Italian Day on March 9 brought out games of bocce ball.

Two guest speakers visited on March 10 to discuss the importance of being bilingual in the workplace. National World Language Week concluded with the viewing of the documentary “Conscience Point,” which focused on Long Island’s Native American tribes and their reservations.
