Girls Track Team Makes History

  • The high school’s girls varsity track and field team won their first league championship since 2016, defeating Westhampton Beach on June 4 by a score of 80-60. Building on this victory, the Lady Redmen continued to make history by hosting the division championships for the first time on June 9, and winning the first division championship in school history. East Islip scored a whopping 113 points, far ahead of the 72 points tallied by the second-place team.

    East Islip’s squad was led by division champion Joy Petersen in the 2000-meter steeple chase and Hannah Smalley in the 800-meter. The 4x400-meter relay team of Grace Micali, Jenna Scandale, Olivia Simonetti and Smalley won the division championship and set a new school record time of 4:09.35. The 4x800-meter team of Hailey DeHaas, Petersen, Danielle Simonetti and Sam Tucci also won the division championship with a time of 10:00.84. The 4x100-meter relay team of Kayla Kniff, Melissa Mirabelli, Gianna Motto and Ayanna O’Neal took 4th place in a season best time of 52.84 seconds. 

    Individual scorers included Deirdre Carney (second place in the pentathlon), Kniff (fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles), Motto (fourth in the 100-meter dash), Petersen (second in 1,500-meter), Scandale (fourth in the 400-meter and fifth in the 200-meter), Danielle Simonetti (second in both the 800-meter and 2,000-meter steeplechase), Olivia Simonetti (second in high jump and third in 800-meter), Smalley (third in 1,500-meter), Tucci (fifth in the 3,000-meter), Sophia Worst (fifth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles).

    The Lady Redmen concluded their season on June 17 at the Section XI individual championships. Olivia Simonetti high jumped 5 feet 1 inch to place fifth overall. Scandale ran a personal record time of 60.33 to take sixth overall. Smalley continued her record-breaking season by taking third overall in the 800-meter with a time of 2:16.2, capping off a remarkable season in which Smalley established herself as the best 800-meter runner in school history, shattering the previous school record by over four seconds. The highlight of the Suffolk County meet was the performance of the 4x800 meter relay team of Petersen, Danielle Simonetti, Olivia Simonetti and Smalley, who won their race by a commanding 20 seconds, earning the title of county champions. Their time of 9:25.99 was the fastest in school history, and it was the first time in East Islip history that a relay team won the county championship. This 4x800 meter relay team finished their season ranked No. 1 on Long Island and No. 3 in New York State.

    “This season was outstanding, and without question, the best the school has ever seen,” said coach John Reynolds. “Every day, the girls came out with a purpose and the results proved that. The bigger the meet, the better the result. They yearned for the best competition and when given the opportunity, showed they were the best kids to run in Suffolk County. I could not be prouder to have coached these wonderful young ladies. Their effort and determination showed me that they will not only be successful on the track but in whatever they put their focus to in life.”


EI Wins LI Baseball Championship

  • The high school’s varsity baseball team won the Long Island championship on June 20, defeating Bethpage High School 14-2 in the exciting Conference IV contest at Mitchel Field. It was East Islip’s first time being named Long Island champions since 1991.

    In a fun family twist, this year’s championship team featured two brothers – senior John Rizzo Jr. (13 strikeouts in a complete game) and sophomore Nick Rizzo (2-for-4 with a triple and five RBIs) – whose father John Rizzo Sr. was a member of the 1991 champion Redmen.

    “We were fortunate to have a great group of talented kids that did everything the coaches asked of them,” said coach Sal Ciampi. “In the end, all the hard work paid off. I have never felt any team was more deserving of winning a championship.”


Hannah Smalley Signs with UD

  • High school senior Hannah Smalley signed a national letter of intent on June 10 to join the track and cross-country team at the University of Delaware in Newark this fall. She will major in pre-veterinary medicine.

    During her athletic career at East Islip, Smalley has earned All-County, All-League, All-Division, and Scholar-Athlete distinction. She is also a member of the school’s National Honor Society and Science Honor Society, and earned high honor roll recognition.


Boys Track Team Takes Fifth in Divisionals

  • The high school’s boys varsity track team recently finished in fifth place in their division championship.

    Josh Terhune led the way by winning the 800-meter race with a time of 2:00.03, one of the fastest times in the county, and placing fourth in the high jump. EI’s 4 x 100 relay team of Joe Margo, Vinny Mariani, Peterson Lowman and Kevin Smith also took first place.

    Second-place finishers included Jason Conzo in pole vault, Smith in the 100-meter race and Javier Ornella in shot put. The 4 x 400 relay team of Conzo, Nick Groneman, James Kelly and Josh Terhune finished in third place, running an impressive race, while Ryan Auffant place fourth in the discus throw. 

    “It was a great team effort watching the boys battle through such tough conditions,” said coach Ralph Tubello. “Congratulations to all the champions and place winners.”


O¡¯Hara Signs With SUNY Cortland

  • High school senior Kaila O’Hara signed a national letter of intent on June 3 to join the swimming and diving team at SUNY Cortland this fall. She plans to major in mathematics and adolescent education.

    A freestyle sprinter, O’Hara serves as swim captain for the Connetquot-East Islip girls varsity swimming and diving team, where she was named MVP in 2019 and 2020-21. She earned All-League recognition in 2018, 2019 and 2020-21, achieved Scholar-Athlete and High Minds in Motion distinction, and was named to the 2017 All-County team. O’Hara was the top scorer for her team at the 2020-21 season Section XI county championships, placing fifth in 100-yard freestyle and seventh in 200-yard freestyle. She also is a member of East Islip’s varsity track and field team, competing as a pole vaulter and sprinter.

    In academics, O’Hara earned a spot in the top 10% of her senior class and is a member of East Islip’s National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society.


Hockey Captain Zembrzycki Signs

  • East Islip Ice Hockey senior captain Tyler Zembrzycki signed a junior hockey contract on May 13 to play for the Long Beach Sharks organization. The center was selected 10th overall on April 28 in the first round of the NA3HL draft.

    A three-year varsity hockey player, Zembrzycki served as assistant captain in his junior year before being named captain as a senior. He finished his high school career in third place overall in scoring in the Suffolk High School Hockey League while only playing 10 games this year. Zembrzycki also plays for the Long Island Arrows 18U travel team, where he finished sixth in the league in scoring out of 319 players.

    Off the ice, Zembrzycki is dedicated to giving back to the community. He helped organize the distribution of pumpkins to the district’s elementary schools, participated in raising American flags along East Islip’s Main Street and served as a student volunteer for the For the Kids Foundation.

    “I am looking forward to this new adventure and hope to see some of you cheering me on in the stands at the Long Beach Arena for the 2021-2022 season,” Zembrzycki said.


A Great Day for Senior Girls Golfers

  • The six seniors on the high school’s girls golf team – Juliana Chillemi, Danielle Muroff, Sarah Piccinini, Jacklyn Schiano, captain Sophia Stryjewski and Marie Tohill – were honored for Senior Day at Timberpoint Golf Course on May 19. Each golfer was greeted by family and friends as they came off the ninth hole and presented with a bouquet of flowers and a poster signed by their teammates. After the match, the seniors and their parents shared a cake on the course terrace. 

    “This was a great way for the girls to end their senior days and years of playing varsity golf,” said coach Judith Fischer.


Perrone Signs to Play College Lacrosse

  • High school senior Giavanna Perrone signed a national letter of intent on Dec. 11 to play lacrosse for Young Harris College in Georgia. She plans to major in creative writing.

    As a freshman at St. John the Baptist in West Islip in 2018, Perrone was the lacrosse team’s leading scorer and won the Sixth Man Award. The midfielder was the East Islip junior varsity leading scorer in 2019. She was named a 2018 Maverik National High School Lacrosse All-American in 2018 and a Maverik National Classic All-Star in 2019, playing in the Maverik National Lacrosse Classic both years, and was selected for the 2019 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s Brine Presidents Cup. Perrone was also a field hockey team captain in 2018 and a member of the National Junior Honor Society.


Mariani to Play Soccer for St. Joe¡¯s

  • High school senior Vincent Mariani signed a national letter of intent on Jan. 25 to play soccer for St. Joseph’s College this fall. He will attend the school’s Long Island campus in Patchogue, playing for the Golden Eagles.

    A center midfielder, Mariani has been a member of East Islip’s soccer and track teams since middle school, and has also played soccer for a club team. In academics, he has earned honor and high honor roll recognition. His future plans are to study to become an educator and eventually a soccer coach.


Boys Bowlers Start Strong

  • The high school’s boys bowling team is off to another amazing start. In just the first six matches, these athletes have posted some large numbers and currently trail first place by only two points.

    Leading the team with a 227 average, senior Joe Zagari bowled a perfect 300 and 30 clean frames in a Jan. 26 match against Lindenhurst High School, while Jack Baranek and team captain Dylan Sgueglia both rolled 299s against West Islip on Jan. 21. In the latter matchup, East Islip posted a high game of 1,299 for five bowlers and a three-game series of 3,398 pins, the county-high total for this season. All five starters – also including Sebastian Gebhard, averaging 205, and Shawn Watts, averaging 216 – are among the top 12 leaders in the league. Rounding out the team, coached by Judith Fischer, are Andrew Jacobsen, Michael Lorefice, Brenden Muller, Adam Seibert, Niko Stavropoulos, Gregg Stephens and Matt Sundberg.


HS Cheerleaders Recognized by Newsday

  • The high school’s cheerleading team, guided by coach Ariel Abesamis, was given honorable mention recognition by Newsday on Feb. 15. Seniors Kayla Brabender and Jules Keaney were highlighted.

Boys Bowlers Take League Title

  • The high school’s boys bowling team recently wrapped up its fifth consecutive league title. The Redmen earned the most points in the county, and Joe Zagari finished with an average of 232, the highest in Suffolk. The team will compete in the county championships on Feb. 28, seeking a fifth straight title.


Senior Raso Signs With SUNY Oneonta

  • High school senior Joe Raso signed a national letter of intent on Feb. 23 to play soccer this fall for SUNY Oneonta. He received a Presidential Scholarship to attend the university, where he plans to major in pre-professional health or accounting.

    A forward, Raso is East Islip’s team captain and has earned All-County All-Conference, All-League, Scholar-Athlete and MVP recognition. He has also played for the past eight years for the Commack United soccer club team, where he also serves as captain. In academics, Raso has earned high honor roll for four consecutive years.


HS Wrestlers Earn League Title

  • The high school’s wrestling team clinched the League V title on Feb. 23 with a 46-12 victory over Kings Park. Freshman star Sebastian Regis earned the title belt for defeating his opponent with a 2:18 pin. Two days later, East Islip beat Half Hollow Hills West by a 53-12 score.


Senior Walsh to Play for SUNY Delhi

  • Senior John Walsh committed to play soccer for SUNY Delhi this fall. He plans to study nursing.

    An All-League center back, Walsh served as 2020 captain for East Islip’s soccer team. He has also played club soccer for Commack United since 2017, and was a member of East Islip’s varsity tennis team as a sophomore.


Twin Bowling Champions!

  • The high school’s boys and girls varsity bowling teams both captured their respective county championships.

    The girls team took the title with a commanding 438-pin victory. The team was led by Natalie Mavrich, who shot a 1336 overall, averaging 222.6 on the day, which was 18 pins higher than her season average. The Lady Redmen had key contributions from everyone on the team, including freshman Kailyn Bloch, who shot a 1,265; eighth grader Dakota Collins, who shot a 1,224; junior Kristy Murphy, who rolled a 1,170; and senior Mia Lembo, who rolled a 1,115. In the final and best match of the day for the team, seventh grader Makayla Boyd came in relief and bowled a 220 in her first county experience.

    In one of the lowest scoring tournaments ever, the boys team shot three high games – 1094 in game 1, 1103 in game 5 and 1109 in game 6 – that led to their fifth straight title. The boys finished the morning session at -92 behind Smithtown. In game 4, the first of the afternoon, they shot a 1,031, a high for all schools in that game, which closed the gap to -12. With a big game 5 scoring 1,103, the Redmen took the lead and never looked back, finishing the tournament at +89 and swinging the tournament by 181 in the afternoon session. Joseph Zagari, who bowled a county high average during the regular season with 232, totaled 1,462 pins for an extraordinary average of 243 on the day. Captain Dylan Sgueglia bowled 234, 206 and 225 in games 1, 3, and 6; Sebastian Gebhard rolled 207 and 245 in game 3 and the critical game 5; and Shawn Watts bowled 246 and 210 in games 1 and 4. Seventh grader Matthew Sundberg subbed in game 4 and stayed in the lineup for games 5 and 6, averaging 229. Jack Baranek added 225 pins in game 3 and subbed in game 6, throwing three strikes in a row at a crucial point in the tournament.


Undefeated Girls Basketball Team Are League Champs

  • The high school’s varsity girls basketball team won four games in five days to go 5-0 as undefeated league champions. This marked the first time since 2001-2002 that the team – led by coach Mike Petre – has claimed back to back crowns. Additionally, sophomore Sara Simonetti and junior Jessica Peluso were named All-County, Junior Kamilah Pasha was named All-Conference and senior Meghan Garnett was named All-League.


Cheerleader Keaney Signs with UD

  • Senior Julianna Keaney signed a national letter of intent on Feb. 23 to continue her cheerleading career at the University of Delaware in Newark. She received the prestigious Blue Hen Success Grant scholarship from UD, where she plans to major in elementary education.

    The 2021 cheerleading team captain for East Islip is a four-year varsity athlete and member of the high school’s Foreign Language Honor Society. Keaney earned All-County and All-Long Island Second Team recognition and has also competed on an All-Star team at Gravity Cheer since she was 9 years old.


Congrats to EI's Suffolk Zone Winners

  • High school seniors Peter Carino and Meghan Garnett were East Islip's recipients of this year’s Suffolk Zone Awards, given by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. One male and one female senior student in each Suffolk high school is honored annually with this prestigious award for their contributions to the overall positive outcomes of their physical education amd health classes as well as their school. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Suffolk Zone Awards ceremony could not be held this year.


Dellavecchia Is East Islip¡¯s First Division I All-American Wrestler!

  • Congratulations to Jesse Dellavecchia, East Islip’s first NCAA Division I All-American wrestler! Dellavecchia went into the NCAA tournament with an undefeated 11-0 record at 157 pounds for Rider University. As the fourth seed in the tournament, he defeated No. 1 seed Ryan Deakin of Northwestern in the semifinals with a fall in 3:18. The graduate of East Islip's Class of 2015 thus became the first Long Islander to reach the Division I wrestling finals since 2004. While Dellavecchia lost 4-0 to Iowa State's David Carr in the final match in St. Louis, this proved to be a season to remember for the EI alumnus.


Mahon to Play Baseball at Penn State

  • High school senior Brandon Mahon signed a national letter of intent on Feb. 23 to play baseball at Pennsylvania State University this fall. He will attend Penn State’s York campus, where he plans to major in business.

    The outfielder and pitcher has been involved in numerous community service outreach events since elementary school, including the high school’s STARS program; Long Island Cares; From the Heart’s Adopt-a-Family program, where he helped remodel a house; and the Polar Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics.


Connetquot Students Go on a Walk for Autism

  • Students at Connetquot participated in the first CES Jigsaw Walk for Autism Awareness on April 7.


Gymnastics League Champions!

  • The high school’s varsity gymnastics team has done nothing but shine this year, remaining undefeated even when faced with last-minute lineup changes and ending the season as League 3 champions. Two gymnasts, Jules Banville and Evie Orlando, also qualified for the individual competition for the top 30 gymnasts in Suffolk County.

    “Congrats to such a wonderful group of girls,” coach Lindsey Panza said. “They should be very proud of themselves and all that they accomplished this season.”


Chiefs Captain Zembrzycki Selected 10th Overall in Hockey Draft

  • East Islip Ice Hockey senior captain Tyler Zembrzycki was recently selected 10th overall in the NA3HL Hockey Draft by the Long Beach Sharks. Zembrzycki finished third overall in high school scoring this season while playing one less game. The star center has grown every year within the organization and was a three-year varsity player for the Chiefs. His passion for the game along with his leadership will no doubt propel him to great opportunities in the future.

     


Season Starts With Superb Shutout

  • The high school’s varsity baseball team began their long-awaited season on May 8 with an impressive 9-0 victory over Half Hollow Hills West at the Moriches Athletic Complex. Senior starting pitcher John Rizzo Jr. set a school record, striking out 20 batters in a complete-game shutout. Rizzo also went 1-for-3 in hitting, driving in three runs. Sophomore Nicholas Rizzo hit a solo home run on the first pitch of his varsity baseball career, Derek Burrell hit a two-run double and Ryan Thompson notched two hits.


Senior Swimmers Sign with Oneonta

  • High school seniors James Llewellyn and Jon Stanzione signed national letters of intent on May 13 to continue their swimming careers this fall at the State University of New York College at Oneonta. Both Llewellyn and Stanzione serve as senior captains of East Islip’s swimming and diving team, and the pair broke a 40-year school record as part of the 200-meter medley relay team.

    Llewellyn has earned All-State, All-County and Scholar-Athlete recognition. He plans to major in education.

    Stanzione has earned All-State, All-Long Island, All-County, All-League, Scholar-Athlete, High Minds in Motion and High Honor Roll recognition, and was the recipient of the Carey Leadership Award. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society and Science Honor Society. Stanzione will pursue a double major in geology and earth science at SUNY Oneonta, which granted him a Presidential Scholarship.


Ryan Smith to Play Lax for Hofstra

  • Senior Ryan Smith signed a national letter of intent on Nov. 12 to play lacrosse for Hofstra University, where he plans to major in physical education.

    A midfielder, the 2021 team captain for East Islip joined the varsity team as a sophomore, when the team played in the county championship game. He earned a Scholar-Athlete award in 2019. Smith, who also plays club lacrosse for Legacy, is a member of the school’s Foreign Language National Honor Society and the Town of Islip Youth Board.


Sophia Worst Signs with Wagner

  • High school senior Sophia Worst signed a national letter of intent on Nov. 12 to play field hockey for Wagner College, a Division I school in Staten Island. Her major is undecided.

    The 2020 team captain, a defender, is a four-year varsity starter. She won All-Division honors in 2019 and the Scholar-Athlete award in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Worst, a member of the school’s National Honor Society, also plays for the Strong Island club team, which qualified to play in the USA Field Hockey National Indoor Tournament in 2019 and 2020. She has participated in USA Field Hockey’s Futures Program since freshman year, and was selected to play on the New York State team for the National Futures Championship and the AAU Junior Olympic Games.

  • During recent physical education classes, Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ students participated in exciting and challenging outdoor fitness activities that promoted health and wellness.

    “Our students are thrilled to be back, engaging in wonderful activities in their academic areas as well as enjoying the great weather and physical education,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “It was fabulous to see the classes enjoying each other’s company while learning new games through structured lessons.”


2020 Grad Dylan Rigo Wins Scholarship

  • High school Class of 2020 graduate Dylan Rigo was recently awarded the John Gagliano Memorial Scholarship due to his outstanding academic and athletic achievements and exemplary service to the East Islip Youth Football League organization. Rigo, an All-County running back/linebacker, served as East Islip’s team captain and earned a county championship in 2016.

    On Aug. 10, just a few days before leaving to attend Utica College, Rigo was visited by EIYFL directors Tom Costarelli and Henry Nunez, who presented him with the scholarship certificate.

    “Throughout his entire football career, Dylan has always made our East Islip community proud of both his success in the classroom as well as on the football field,” Costarelli and Nunez said. “Most importantly, he has always returned to his East Islip Youth Football roots to help out. We wish Dylan all the best as he embarks on the next chapter in his college football career.”

Senior Samantha Winegard Signs for Softball with Muhlenberg

  • High school senior Samantha Winegard recently signed a national letter of intent to play softball for Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where she plans to study biology/pre-med.

    As a softball player for EI for four years on the varsity level, Winegard earned All-Division and All-Region First team honors. She also played on the school’s varsity volleyball team. An AP Scholar and historian of the school’s National Honor Society, Winegard is also a member of East Islip’s Foreign Language Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and STARS club.


Football Stars Higgins and Rigo Sign Letters of Intent

  • In June, senior athletes Tom Higgins and Dylan Rigo – both now graduates of the Class of 2020 – signed national letters of intent to play football in college. Higgins will attend Western Connecticut State University this fall, while Rigo will attend Utica College. Superintendent John Dolan and varsity football coaches Sal Ciampi and Mike Gentile were in attendance at the official signing to celebrate with both seniors.

    Higgins and Rigo began playing football together a dozen years ago in the Suffolk County Police Athletic League, a friendship that continued into their careers on the East Islip varsity team, where both earned All-County status, Higgins as a middle linebacker and Rigo as a running back/linebacker and team captain. As freshmen, the two were part of East Islip’s 2016 county championship squad.


Visit from a Talented Wizard

  • Harlem Wizards basketball player Patric Massey, also known as “The Artist,” visited Timber Point on Jan. 8, sharing personal stories about his childhood and how he handled bullies and overcame obstacles to be a successful athlete. During the PTA-sponsored event, Massey also enlisted several student and teacher volunteers to participate in basketball tricks and games.

    “The entire school was mesmerized by his cheerful personality and talents with the basketball,” said Principal Danielle Naccarato.


JV Cheerleaders Earn Second Place

  • The high school’s junior varsity cheerleading team recently finished second overall in a competition held at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station.

     


Porti Signs with Molloy College

  • Senior Emily Porti signed a national letter of intent on Jan. 30 to continue her track and cross-country career at Molloy College this coming fall. She plans to major in nursing. During her years in East Islip, Porti earned All-County, All-League, All-Division and All-American recognition as well as the High Minds in Motion award. She chose Molloy for its excellent nursing and athletics programs.


Cheerleaders Win First Place

  • The high school varsity cheerleaders won first place at their last competition on the first weekend of February, and the team’s seniors were recognized.


Tricarico to Play Hockey for Canisius

  • High school senior Will Tricarico signed a National Letter of Intent on Feb. 10 to continue his ice hockey career at Canisius College in Buffalo, where he will play for the Division 1 Golden Griffins. He plans on majoring in sports management.

    In 2014, Tricarico was recognized by the Nassau County Legislature for demonstrating commitment, leadership and dedication when his PAL hockey team represented the United States in the United World Games Lighthouse Tournament in Harbin, China.

    As captain of the East Islip High School Ice Hockey Club, coached by Danny Barbarito and Robby Miller, Tricarico ended his senior season with 24 goals and 21 assists, placing him fifth in the ranking of Suffolk County High School Hockey League varsity scoring leaders. He also plays travel hockey with the No. 2-ranked Long Island Rebels U18 team coached by Frank Dell’Isola. Both of Tricarico’s teams will play in the state championships this year.

    During his time at East Islip High School, he also was a member of the school’s varsity golf and tennis teams. 


Boys Bowlers Win Fourth Consecutive County Title

  • The boys varsity bowling team came out on top at Sayville’s Bowlero on Feb. 8 to capture their fourth consecutive county title. The team features captain Sonny Pico alongside Chris Andresen, Jack Barancek, Sebastian Gebhard, Nick Illare, PJ Miglionico, Dylan Sgueglia, Shawn Watts and Joe Zagari. The team will compete for the state title on March 15 in Syracuse.


Redmen Wrestlers Take Third

  • The high school’s wrestling team recently competed in the League IV championships at Bellport High School, boasting 11 place winners and earning third place overall as a team with 171 total points.

    The Redmen had three finalists: freshman Justin Shayew (29-7) at 99 pounds, junior Michael Colon (24-10) at 152 pounds and senior Arjay Wilko (31-7) at 182 pounds. Shayew won the 99-pound bracket with a pin over top-seeded Vincent Romano of North Babylon High School. Other outstanding efforts for East Islip included seventh grader Logan Alfalla (23-12) placing third at 99 pounds, eighth grader Sebastian Regis (16-9) placing fourth at 220 pounds, junior Louie Cinquemani (20-12) placing fourth at 126 pounds, junior Shane Lyons (18-6) placing third at 152 pounds, junior Peter Carino (26-4) placing third at 160 pounds, junior Rich Lawrence (25-12) placing fourth at 285 pounds, senior Mark Shayew (24-9) placing third at 145 pounds and senior Nick Agresta (31-7) placing fourth at 195 pounds.

    All 11 place winners qualified for the Suffolk County tournament, held Feb. 15-16 at Suffolk Community College’s Brentwood campus. Justin Shayew beat John Tietjen of Sachem East to take fifth place in the 99-pound bracket.


Lady Redmen¡¯s Resurgence Marks EI Basketball

  • The high school’s girls varsity basketball team finished the regular season 16-4 overall and 11-1 in league play, earning them their first league championship since 2004. They also defeated Sachem North in the playoffs on Feb. 12 by a score of 56-47 to advance to the Elite 8, where they will meet Ward Melville on Feb. 19.

    Seniors Hannah Calarco, Alexa Fusco and Gia Gremaux helped spark the Lady Redmen’s resurgence this season. Gremaux was named All-County; sophomore Jessica Peluso, junior Kira Rumfola and freshman Sara Simonetti were named All-League; sophomore Kamilah Pasha earned League IV Rookie of the Year honors; and coach Mike Petre was honored as League Coach of the Year for the 11th time.

    “We sincerely thank the staff, administration, parents and students for their amazing and unwavering support as well as their unbridled enthusiasm,” Petre said.


Welch Signs to Run for Cortland

  • Senior Bridget Welch signed a national letter of intent on Feb. 6 to continue her track and field career at SUNY Cortland this fall. She plans to major in secondary education while running for the Red Dragons.

    The captain of East Islip’s girls track team, Welch earned All-League and All-Division honors during her high school career, specializing in the 400-meter hurdles.


Fourth and Fifth Graders Compete in Town Hoops Contest

  • Fourth and fifth graders at Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ and RCK elementary schools recently competed at the school level for the 34th annual Town of Islip Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest.

    Sponsored since 1993 by the Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs and the Islip Elks, the Sharp Shooter “Just Say No to Drugs” program offers local students the challenge of scoring as many baskets as possible in one minute, improving their skills in basketball while providing an alternative to drug abuse.

    Winning first place for Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½ at the school level were fourth-graders Andrew Bruno and Madison Greene and fifth-graders Avery Bowden and Joe Cardillo. Ñî¹óåú´«Ã½’s second-place finishers included Gabriel Acevedo, Ryan Bradley, Joe Commande, MacKenzie Godbout, Owen Madden and Olivia Shaw.

    Taking first place for RCK at the school level were fourth-graders Hunter Guzman and Caitlyn Repiak and fifth-graders Kevin Defilipis and Lily Pasha.

    Each school’s first-place winners moved on to participate in the townwide contest’s final round on March 7. 


Former EIHS Wrestler Wins Mid-American Conference

  • This past weekend, former Redmen wrestler Jesse Dellavecchia won the Mid-American Conference for Rider University at 157 pounds, securing a 4-1 victory over Jarrett Jacques from Missouri University in the finals. Dellavecchia is the first wrestler from East Islip to win a Division 1 conference championship. Currently ranked sixth in the 157-pound weight division, he will wrestle in the Division 1 NCAA Championships at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on March 19-21.


Trio of EI Swimmers Earn All-State Honors

  • High school athletes James Llewellyn, Nick Spameni and Jon Stanzione qualified for and recently competed in the New York State swimming championships, finishing 19th overall in the 200-meter medley relay and earning All-State honors.


Two HS Girls Bowlers Selected for All-Long Island

  • Junior Natalie Mavrich and eighth grader Kailyn Bloch were two of only six high school girls bowlers selected by Newsday for All-Long Island status for the past season!


Stadium Scoreboard Support for Class of 2020 Athletes

  • The high school showed support for the senior athletes of the Class of 2020 on May 1 by displaying “2020” on the Sal Ciampi Field at Sal Boomer Esiason Stadium scoreboard.
